3 Cartoon Customers

#18A – Create a Customer Avatar

For the ZipStrip I have been exploring several types of people who would be interested. I originally only started with one, but through my interviews and the responses to my previous work I have found better ways to picture who would be interested in my ZipStrip.

Customer #1: The Tough Fit
  • This group is using the ZipStrip to make jackets fit better for a variety of reasons such as:
    • weight transition
    • pregnancy
    • proportions that don't fit normal sizes (original use for Jeff who's arm length would not fit jackets if he went up a size)
  • They are probably interested in a ZipStrip that fits into a jacket (black or neutral color) to not draw attention since the purpose is utility and not cosmetics
  • This group is mostly middle aged adults

Consumer #2: The Fan
  • This customer has a loyalty to a brand or team that they want to display in a colorful ZipStrip (UF would be the ideal first brand to reach out for this)
  • They have lots of enthusiasm, but not as much money and use a ZipStrip to show spirit without buying a full jacket (official merch is expensive and jackets are especially so)
  • This is a younger demographic of teenagers and adults

Customer #3: The Customizer

  • This group loves to come up with new and exciting ways to change their look and add to outfits
  • I gave the avatar a fun hair color, a bright ZipStrip that complements the jacket, and several pins just for fun detail
  • They like that the ZipStrip is a cheap way to add an extra strip of color to any of their jackets
  • This is again young people, probably no children, and smaller budget

Conclusion: I think I am much more similar to the Customizer in that I have recently gotten more conscious of how I dress, but would love a branded ZipStrip for a few nerdy obsessions. I so far have not had trouble with clothing sizes so my uses would be primarily cosmetic.

I had fun making my avatars, and especially editing to add in the different ZipStrips. My only complaint with how I ended up doing this is that after I had done the first avatar I discovered that the tool I was using had no settings to handle weight and different body types as well as really poor skin tones for different ethnicities which really felt restrictive.

Comments

  1. You spent a lot of time on this assignment and I could tell you really enjoyed this assignment. I think I could relate to the Avator #2 the fan. I would love to be able to just zip a UF logo into my clothing. This would allow me to represent my team no matter the occasion. You did a great job! Good luck bringing this to life.

Zipping into Youtube fame

Introducing the Zip Strip! *Only one jacket was harmed in the making of this video* 10A – Elevator Pitch No. 1 I only counted 11 "uh"s in this, which seems to be my filler word. Please give me feedback on any other improvements I could make or comments on the product.

Zip it Up

7A – Testing the Hypothesis This is an idea I had last year while working in AmeiCorps when one of my co-workers couldn't close his jacket. The zipper didn't quite reach because he was heavier with a shorter frame. If he had gone up a size the sleeves and torso would be too long, but with the current size he would have to hold his breath to use the zipper. To solve this I came up with the idea of a special strip of jacket with zippers on both sides that you could use to extend the waist by zipping it into the jacket on either side. Adding what is basically a extension to the torso width of the jacket this way would be cheaper and easier than getting a custom fitted jacket. If that was hard to visualize, below is the poor drawing I did during one of my interviews to explain it visually.   Some larger people have trouble finding jackets that fit their waistline without being too large for their proportions. The who: Heavier people The what: Have trouble find...

Finding expert advice

20A – Growing Your Social Capital For this assignment I emailed three people who could help me understand how to sell my ZipStrip. Because I have three different groups of customers I want to market to for this assignment I focused on only  the "Fan" group.  Supply Expert: Pamela Braseth Dragon Sports founder Pam is an family friend and gave me my two first jobs, so I have a lot of experience asking her for favors. She also was the owner of a triathlon store and sold the team caps, suits, jackets, and shirts to all the local swim teams in my area which makes her the only person I know with experience acting as a supplier for sports teams. My favor to her was a list of questions about how, when, and who buys these team merch items. Is it just for the swimmers? Do the parents and family members want their own shirts?  How were the items branded to the teams (team colors, logos, mascots, slogans...)? In asking for this information I promised to make a set ...
