20 Things that drive me a little crazy (Clickbait?)

2A – Bug List

These 20 things come up more often than I'd want and usually make me upset. The explanation for each is under the complaint, and is sure to make me look petty.

  1. Buying textbooks and supplies for classes is a hassle.

    1. Each class needs different things, many of which have to be bought in multiple ways to avoid spending too much money.

  2. My microwave beeps four times upon finishing its cycle, and there is no way to cut off or stop the beeps if you let the timer end.

    1. The beep is used to make sure the user doesn’t forget their food in the microwave.

  3. Learning more about politics has made me less happy, but I know enough now that I can’t let myself ignore it.

    1. News isn’t always good, but being informed is the only way to change it.

  4. I have too much stuff, so moving into and organizing an apartment was frustrating.

    1. While there is a reason for why I have all of it, some of my clothes and clutter don’t get used often and probably could be donated.

  5. The led from mechanical pencils breaks way too easily.

    1. They make the lead thin so a lot of it can fit in the pencil and so that you have to buy more when it breaks (conspiracy hat).

  6. When autocorrect doesn't actually know what I want to say, but still changes my words.

    1. My spelling is sometimes so poor that even google doesn’t know what I think.

  7. Biting your tongue or the inside of your cheek and then being forced to wait for a week hoping you don't bite it more and it can heal.

    1. Our mouths are constantly moving so any bite is easily irritated.

  8. Accidentally getting caught on a drawer and pulling headphones out while working in the kitchen.

    1. My kitchen is full of round knobs that the cord gets wrapped around, and I enjoy getting into cooking while listening to an audiobook or podcast so I am usually not paying attention to the cord.

  9. Cats thinking notebooks and laptops are things to walk on, only when you start doing homework.

    1. Cats want your attention, but only when it is convenient for them.

  10. It’s hard to get the paper off of a cupcake without getting your fingers messy.

    1. The icing usually extends over the sides where you need to pull on the edge of the paper.

  11. Peanut Butter at the bottom of the jar is hard to reach.

    1. The shape of the jar makes it hard to reach the bottom and sides with a standard knife.

  12. Restaurants insist on giving people straws, but they are mostly useless and harmful to the environment.

    1. People want the convenience of a top on their drink and ease of not moving the cup to their mouth.

  13. When people on the bus are having a conversation that is either too loud or is somehow offensive and I am too polite to do anything other than try not to listen and hope they stop.

    1. Public Transportation means it is a public place and people can say what they want.

  14. All of my doorways are too wide for the pull up bar I bought.

    1. I should have measured the frames before buying.

  15. Free trials usually end by making you pay for the product or subscription instead of just ending.

    1. It is a smart business model and you have to agree to it to activate the trial in the first place.

  16. The fact that actually driving the speed limit is usually less safe because that makes you slower than the flow of traffic.

    1. People want to speed and traffic laws are not enforced consistently.

  17. When I wake up in the middle of the night with a really good idea but then forget it.

    1. I don’t have any way to record my idea within easy reach.

  18. It can be hard to understand the nutrition information on food packages.

    1. We use the metric system for nutrition so the dumb Americans used to the imperial system won’t see how unhealthy something is (conspiracy hat)

  19. At parks there are a lot of signs saying “don’t climb the trees” but I never see any signs saying “this one is ok to climb”

    1. Climbing trees is probably unsafe and would cause legal problems for the parks if someone got hurt.

  20. The sleep button is on the side corner of my laptop in a way that lets it accidentally get pressed when am just adjusting the computer or trying to press the volume buttons.

    1. The screen of my laptop folds back like a tablet, so the button goes into a convenient place in that mode, but the location is bad for when I’m typing.

Writing 20 things that bug me didn't seem difficult at first, but I soon had trouble finding ones I liked enough to say I dislike. The most difficult aspect was deciding if small things were too petty or actionable bugs. I tried to not select bugs where the solution was just to not do something, or bugs where a solution already existed.

  1. Hey Paul!
Your first post for ENT3003 looks excellent. I’m impressed by the fact that it’s obviously very well formatted and organized. It’s very visually appealing. My favorite “bug” of yours is definitely #2. My microwave is very similar; however, instead of beeping four times, mine beeps until I physically open the door. With regards to an opportunity for improvement, I am unable to find anything that’s wrong with your post. You did a fantastic job.

  2. Hello Paul,
Awesome post, I like that you blog is spaced out and clean it makes it a lot easier to read. I think number 5 and 11 are probably the most relevant to me. getting things out of deep jars is really annoying and i rarely have the tools to sole this. Good luck on your other assignments.

Zipping into Youtube fame

Introducing the Zip Strip! *Only one jacket was harmed in the making of this video* 10A – Elevator Pitch No. 1 I only counted 11 "uh"s in this, which seems to be my filler word. Please give me feedback on any other improvements I could make or comments on the product.

Zip it Up

7A – Testing the Hypothesis This is an idea I had last year while working in AmeiCorps when one of my co-workers couldn't close his jacket. The zipper didn't quite reach because he was heavier with a shorter frame. If he had gone up a size the sleeves and torso would be too long, but with the current size he would have to hold his breath to use the zipper. To solve this I came up with the idea of a special strip of jacket with zippers on both sides that you could use to extend the waist by zipping it into the jacket on either side. Adding what is basically a extension to the torso width of the jacket this way would be cheaper and easier than getting a custom fitted jacket. If that was hard to visualize, below is the poor drawing I did during one of my interviews to explain it visually.   Some larger people have trouble finding jackets that fit their waistline without being too large for their proportions. The who: Heavier people The what: Have trouble find...

Finding expert advice

20A – Growing Your Social Capital For this assignment I emailed three people who could help me understand how to sell my ZipStrip. Because I have three different groups of customers I want to market to for this assignment I focused on only  the "Fan" group.  Supply Expert: Pamela Braseth Dragon Sports founder Pam is an family friend and gave me my two first jobs, so I have a lot of experience asking her for favors. She also was the owner of a triathlon store and sold the team caps, suits, jackets, and shirts to all the local swim teams in my area which makes her the only person I know with experience acting as a supplier for sports teams. My favor to her was a list of questions about how, when, and who buys these team merch items. Is it just for the swimmers? Do the parents and family members want their own shirts?  How were the items branded to the teams (team colors, logos, mascots, slogans...)? In asking for this information I promised to make a set ...
